Gloriosa Lily: watercolour painting by Marion Shepherd, 2004 [10 of 14]

The plant of Gloriosa superba from which I painted this work grows in my neighbour's front garden. Each year a tough green shoot pushes its way up through the soil and produces a multi-stemmed lily with the most spectacular blooms. As the flower matures the petals extend backwards and the stamens become very prominent. It is a particularly sculptural flower and lends itself to a somewhat abstract approach.
Quite coincidentally in 2005 we saw one in flower in central Sri Lanka near the Kandalama Tank.
