Emperor Gum Moth: watercolour painting by Marion Shepherd, 2005 [11 of 14]

This dramatic moth, Opodiphthera eucalypti, came to me as both a specimen and a photograph, so I had ample opportunity to study it in close detail. It is a magnificent work of art and nature with a wingspan of between 130 & 150 mm, superb hairy grey-brown-pinky-orange wings, large feathered antennae and wonderful eye-spots. It was a joy to paint.
