Dragon: watercolour painting by Marion Shepherd, 2002 [8 of 14]

This painting is a departure from my usual subjects of flora and fauna. It is one of several works I painted while living in Hong Kong with my husband from 2001 -2003. We were both attracted by the Chinese culture and I found their dragons particularly fascinating. This gorgeous 5-clawed dragon is based on one I saw on a piece of antique embroidery. I have taken liberties with the colours but as a 5-clawed dragon it is true to the image reserved for the royal ranks because the Emperor was considered to be a direct descendant of this heavenly creature. Chinese dragons are seen as lucky and full of positive energy. If you are interested in Chinese dragons, there is a wonderful book written in 2002 by Carmen Chan & Anita Ramchand and published by Youhon International, called "Dance with the Dragon".
