Hazelnuts: watercolour painting by Marina Albert, 1998 [7 of 17]

1998 Hazelnuts
Corylus avellana - common name: Hazelnut or Filbert.
The cultivated hazelnuts or filberts ripen in the northern hemisphere about St. Philbert's Day, August 22nd. There are several varieties which produce either elongated fruits or round fruits which are eaten fresh or dried; used in confectionary and desserts; and when pressed produce an oil used in cosmetics and perfumes.
This Cob-nut hazel is a dried fruit bought in the local delicatessen shop.
