Magnolia: watercolour painting by Kay Craig, 2000 [10 of 17]

Magnolia delavayii
This beautiful Chinese magnolia from the Yunan province has incredibly large leaves and stunning creamy flowers with a gorgeous fragrance. The individual flowers last only a day or so and because of this I had to climb the tree on a friend's property to do the initial drawings and colour swatches. Back in my studio, the picked flower lasted about six hours before turning brownish and losing its texture. M. delavayi is not often seen in gardens, but a specimen in full bloom is worth searching for.
